Engoyan A. Geopolitical factor of Armenia in the South Caucasus region

ABSTRACT. The geographical borders of Armenia since the times of the First Republic were largely determined not only thanks to the heroic struggle of the Armenian people for independence, but were also the result of resolving many contradictions and reaching compromises between various geopolitical players in the region. At the present stage of historical development, one of the challenges for the Armenian people has been the activation of the pan-Turkic segment in the Eurasian space. According to the current situation the geopolitical factor of Armenia in the region, determined by history, is clearly manifested, designed to become a significant obstacle to the expansion of the pan-Turkic area. Today, like a hundred years ago, many world geopolitical centers, albeit to varying degrees, are interested in having a presence in Armenia and strengthening their influence in the country. In this context, as well as in the changing paradigm of global development, Armenia will have to develop a balanced foreign policy strategy that takes into consideration the historical mistakes of past generations.

ABSTRACT. Exogenous shocks have become a subject of study for many economists, due to their increasing number, the greater degree of unexpectedness and unpredictability of their occurrence, and consequently their more severe consequences, especially in the last few years. Over the years of its independence, the Armenian economy has had to endure such shocks more than once, and each time the consequences for the economy have become more extensive and deeper. This paper will examine the Armenian economy under the conditions of exogenous shocks. By analyzing the past (global financial and economic crisis of 2008–2009, regional currency crisis of 2014), recent (crisis of 2020 – COVID-19 and the second Artsakh war) and current (positive exogenous shock in 2022) shocks, the main transmission channels of the shocks will be identified.
